Pokémon GO - Leaving a Pokemon at a gym for days should accrue 50 coins per day

Leaving a Pokemon at a gym for days should accrue 50 coins per day

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 12:07 PM PST

The daily limit is 50 coins a day. A Pokemon defending a gym for several days should earn the daily amount of coins for each day that it stays there. For example, leaving a Snorlax at my local gym should earn 150 coins instead of the 50 that it would earn currently. It does not make sense to me that a Pokemon would earn only 50 coins despite defending the gym for multiple days. I think it has to do with the coins being tallied on the day that the Pokemon returns rather than accounting for total time spent. Or maybe it's a deliberate choice that a single Pokemon can only earn up to 50 coins regardless of total time spent defending.

What do you think? What are some opponents to this idea? Any insights?

Edit: some users interpret this as a Pokemon generates coins for the player and the player collects while it's still in the gym. What I'm talking about is only the amount of coins. The Snorlax in my example wouldn't send 50 coins at the end of every day, it would simply bring home 150 coins after three full days of defending and then being kicked out.

The maintenance on Battle League somehow made it worse?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:44 AM PST

Every game I get weak connection, although my internet and mobile internet (I've tried both) are just fine.

I can't use fast attacks in the first battle until my opponent already has landed 4 or 5 fast attacks.

There is a delay when using charge attacks. I press the button to use charge attack, but the attack itself doesn't start until my opponent has landed 3 fast attacks on me, or even their own charge attack, which continiued to charge while my Pokémon just stood in the pre-charge attack stance doing nothing.

In my last battle, someone shielded me three times.

    WTF is going on?

The switching glitch MUST be fixed.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 12:28 AM PST

I am doing this post in the hope that it gets visibility from Niantic, even because I am fed up with all the bugs and glitches that prevent me to have a fair experience in the GBL. During the last two sessions, I have gone twice 1/5 (I am rank 9) because in 4 matches straight I had the stupid window popping up automatically, leading me to switch my backseat pokemon (whiscash or azumarill) against direct counters (meganium, venusaur or lanturn) and gain a loss. I know it is not the worst bug out there, but honestly it is ruining both my experience and rank.

So I just realized that Pikachu has a best buddy ribbon in the loading screen. I don't know how many people realize this. Probably a lot and this is just me being stupid for not noticing. But maybe I'm not the only one. Doesn't make me not stupid but at least I won't have to use this as an example. This is really just an excuse to use the "100 characters" rule 😛

Why can't Niantic add a counter for buddy hearts?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 11:01 AM PST

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but this is absolutely the most annoying thing to me in PoGo at the moment. Today, for example, I started out with my best buddy gauge being full, but not complete. I knew I wouldn't need to use a poffin because the gauge was already full. Yet, after 7 hearts, it's still not complete. I know I'm not a dev, and I know my opinion truly doesn't matter, but why would you not add a counter to the gauge when you already have a counter for the friend gauge?

Incense should lure Pokémon that’s on your Nearby Radar instead of random spawns.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 07:51 AM PST

I always thought it made more sense if the incense "lured" the Pokémon that were close by! It could really be helpful in CD's as well as make me actually use them rather than watch them rust(?) in my inventory.

I'm sure this has been said before but just felt annoyed enough to need to write about it.

    Have a good day!

Idea for the ability to Lock your Pokémon - an addition to the Favourite system.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 08:00 AM PST

I've been thinking of this idea, not sure if others have discussed this before, for the ability to Lock a Pokémon, making it unable to be modified in any way possible.

The Favourite system is used primarily so we don't accidentally transfer a prized mon, but what about a way to be unable to evolve it if we didn't want to, or more importantly, power it up so it doesn't pass a PvP threshold for example.

Countless times I have accidentally tapped Evolve on a Pokémon, almost causing me to spend 25-100 candies on accident. I've even once accidentally given a mon a 2nd charged move from the simplest bump.

Wouldn't it be nice to Lock a Pokémon so that there are no more accidents? It would be a feature that guarantees that your specific Pokémon that serve a specific purpose can no longer be altered beyond what's necessary.

The feature would most likely be listed among the Appraise or Transfer features, and like Favouriting, it can be toggled in case you change your mind.

What is your opinion on additional control and security on your prized Pokémon?

Possibly unpopular opinion: tying Go Battle League entries to distance walked is great game design

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 08:47 AM PST

By great game design, I specifically mean that it fits very nicely with the core 'get up and go' spirit of Pokemon Go. I find myself taking extra trips, or walking longer while I'm already out, to get that last bit of distance needed for the next entry. Before Go Battle League, I only really walked extra on Sundays to meet Adventure Sync goals-- or took a longer detour if an extremely rare spawn popped up. Looking at my apple health app, I've been walking about 1km more on average every day (from 6 to 7) since GBL launched.

That said, I feel like the walking thresholds might need some tweaking. Needing to walk/bank 15km to play the daily maximum 5 sets of 5 matches might be too much for the average person. Not everyone NEEDS to play 5 sets a day, but having that maximum be realistically attainable would be nice for those who want to push themselves. I'd rather the distance per set be cut down from 3km to 2km. I also find the ever-present pay with Pokecoins prompt to be annoying, but sadly expected for a F2P mobile game. The premium reward track also doesn't really make sense-- there should be an option to use your daily orange pass for entry.

All in all, I'm enjoying GBL and I'm cautiously optimistic that Niantic can build on and polish it further.

    Pokemon Go battle forcing switch?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 10:17 PM PST

Is it just me or is PoGo battle forcing me to switch Pokemon every now and then? For example, when I switch out a type advantaged Pokemon after one faints, it immediately brings up the switch screen again bringing in the Pokemon I didn't want. Don't know of its just me or what.

GO Battle League Tips and Strategy for Beginners (with video examples!)

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 12:54 PM PST

    1. Choose pokemon that are close to the CP limit of the league

This may seem like common sense to some of you, but I've had many great-league battles against people who have chosen 1300 CP pokemon. Unfortunately, these pokemon just can't compete with 1490 CP pokemon.

    2. Look for a high PVP IV, not just a high IV

You can use apps like Poke Genie that will calculate this for you, but in case you can't be bothered, a good PVP IV means having high defense and high HP, but low attack. This is because attack over-inflates a pokemon's CP and will make their CP higher. The higher CP is good for things like raids and gym battles, but in a league where you have to stay under a certain CP, it is not ideal.

That said, don't get too hung up on IV. It's really not as important as 3.👇🏻

    3. Choose poke types that complement each other

I'll use my own go-to team as an example. My best GBL pokemon is a dark type. Since dark type is weak to fairy type and fighting type, i choose my other two pokemon to be strong against those two types. In other words:

Poke 1 (dark): susceptible to fighting and fairy

Poke 2 (poison): strong vs fairy

Poke 3 (fairy): strong vs fighting

That way, if I start with my dark type, and my opponent pops out a granbull, I can quickly switch to my poison type instead, and now I have the upper hand with type effectiveness.

    Another example:

Poke 1 (fire): weak vs water and ground/rock

Poke 2 (grass): strong vs water and ground/rock

Poke 3 (water): strong vs fire and ground/rock

You can find a chart explaining the type-effectiveness of different pokemon here: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/6if11e/mobilefriendly_type_effectiveness_chart_with/

    4. The highest damage-per-second charge attack won't necessarily output the most damage

With the way the charge attacks and shields are used in GBL, damage per second is not the most important thing for charge attacks. Actually, having an attack that charges quicker but does less damage is usually better than a more-damaging attack that takes a longer time to charge.

This is due to two features of GBL:

    A) Protect shields. The protect shield is an incredibly valuable tool in GBL, and your usage of your shields is often the make-it or break-it factor in battles (more details later). So, it's only logical that you want to make your opponent use their shields poorly. Having an attack that charges quickly will face your opponent with the difficult decision of either using up one of their shields to block it or risking it doing serious damage to their pokemon. This is also why it's important to have a strong type-effective team. Even low-output attacks can do a ton of damage if they're typed correctly.

    B) Battles are fast-paced. Meaning, if you're using a massive attack that takes forever to charge, there's a good chance that you won't even get to use it before your pokemon is taken out. And, even if you do get to use it, your opponent may block it anyway.

My best tip for choosing a good charge attack is to Google to find out what different move sets are available for your chosen pokemon. Then, play around with different ones in the practice battles against the team leaders. Find one that charges quickly and deals a reasonable amount of damage.

NOTE: when selecting a charge attack, be sure to check the attack's damage for "trainer battles" in the pokemon's info screen. Some attacks do different damage vs gyms/raids than vs other trainers. Example: the charge attack "Solar Beam" does 180 damage in gyms/raids but only 150 in trainer battles.

    5. Use your shields strategically

As I previously mentioned, shields are often a make-it or break-it factor in GBL, so you really don't want to be using them haphazardly. Here's some questions for determining whether your need to use a shield or not for a specific attack:

    A. Is the pokemon type strong against yours? It's very valuable to take a few minutes to study the type-effectiveness chart. If the pokemon that is attacking you is a strong type vs yours, it is probably a good idea to use a shield. But also consider other attacks that your opponent's pokemon could have.

For example: If I'm using vaporeon, and an jolteon is attacking me, you best believe that I'm going to use that shield because jolteon's attack is going to do massive damage. On the other hand, if I'm using vaporeon, and a flareon is attacking me, I probably don't need to worry about it too much since it has poor type-effectiveness.

    B. How tanky is your pokemon? And how much HP does your pokemon have. If you have a low HP pokemon, it might be best to use the shield. On the other hand, if you're using a super tanky pokemon like umbreon, you can probably withstand most charge attacks without the shield.

    C. How long did it take for their attack to charge? If their attack charged very quickly, there's a good chance that it is a weak attack and you might not need to block. On the other hand, if they have been charging this attack for a long time, it might be wise to use the shield.

    D. How did their charge attack affect your previous shields? In GBL, you can get a rough estimate of how much damage an attack would have done based on how it affected your shield. Ie, if the attack hits your shield and it turns red, it would have done massive damage. If it turns blue, it would have done moderate damage. If it doesn't change color, it probably wouldn't have done that much damage.

Here is a video example of me using these questions to strategically determine whether or not I need to block. Notice: my opponent's type is weak vs mine, their attack charged quickly, and my pokemon is very tanky: https://youtu.be/G_YXR6Ta5OE

Here is also an example of me blocking an attack and the shield turning red. I then didn't block the next one so you can see how much damage it would have done: https://youtu.be/-kxMa7y-BL8

    6. Swap pokemon strategically

Since there is a cool-down time for swapping pokemon, you want to be sure that you choose the right time to swap and the right pokemon. You don't want to end up with a pokemon that is weak vs your opponent being stuck in the battle because you're waiting for the button to become available again. I recently made this mistake and it cost me the battle (ended a 19-win streak too 😢).

The best reason to swap pokemon is that your current poke is weak vs the type of your opponent's pokemon. Another valid reason is if you are trying to save a charge attack for when your opponent no longer has a shield.

Here's a video example of me swapping out a type that is weak vs my opponent for a type that is strong. I left each in the battle for a moment so you could see the massive difference in how much damage it is taking, but ideally, you'll want to swap right away: https://youtu.be/9CLaKt3TQLM

Don't forget that your opponent can swap too! Don't be too surprised if your opponent swaps pokemon right after you do. There's some different ways you can deal with this, but that's getting into some pretty advanced strategy. For the average person, it doesn't really matter too much.

    7. Charge attacks can stack

Meaning, if you have a charge attack that is all charged up and ready to go, you will keep charging the next one, even if you don't use it right away.

This can be very valuable if your opponent has low health and the attack would be better used on their next pokemon instead. Here's a video example of this in action: https://youtu.be/ZxK8HCrriyg

So, hopefully all of this gives you a better idea of some basic strategy in the GO Battle League. Best of luck battling!

After my dragonite and rhyperior fainted, tyranitar pulled it through. Cliff's first pokèmon was a stantler so I was excited for another purification, until I saw it. I screamed on the inside! It was a shiny shadow! I got worried as I noticed I only had 7 premier balls (I only got bronze medals for both hero and purifier) so I had a chance of letting it go. One ball, standard, no berry.
