    Wouldn't the megas make more sense if they were tied to the buddy system?

    I'm not just talking about this because I'm a solo player and can't get megas, canonically doesn't it make sense?

    Weren't megas supposed to be possible canonically because of the bond between trainer and pokemon? That sounds a lot like the buddy system, it just doesn't really make too much sense for them to be possible with any and all of the specific species of pokemon.

    I think it would be a lot better if there was a tier above best buddy (maybe something like mega buddy) where the pokemon becomes able to mega evolve with a cooldown timer or something.

    “Megas were always temporary” is technically true but totally misleading. They were usable in every fight with no costs and no cooldowns.

    I know some people get snippy when we compare Pokémon Go to earlier games, but I think it's important to understand how mega pokemon could ever have been good enough for anyone to like them.

    Back when megas were a good thing:

    Mega evolution was as "temporary" as the lights in a public bathroom. Every time it turned off, you could just wave at it and it would turn back on instantly. The only real limits on it were:

    • One per party.

    • If they faint, they're de-evolved for the rest of the battle.

    • They can't do anything interesting with held items, because they have to hold their one mega stone to make this whole thing work.

    That's it. If you followed those rules, you could use a mega Pokémon for every turn of every battle forever without using anything up or waiting for anything, just like any other Pokémon.
